Tolka is a pioneering startup backed by Khosla Ventures and Draper Associates that is focused on developing phage therapy to solve humanity’s most significant threat: antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are on track to kill more people than cancer by 2050, and phages, viruses that kill bacteria, are our best bet to stop them.
We seek motivated, ambitious, and talented interns to join our microbiology team. Pay starts at $13/hour. This role offers hands-on experience in a cutting-edge research environment, where you will contribute to the discovery and development of phage-based treatments to control antibiotic-resistant or hard-to-treat bacterial infections.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect environmental samples, such as soil, sewage, pond water, compost, and farm waste, from designated sites for phage hunting.
- Prepare and process samples for analysis, i.e., isolating potential phages.
- Assist in preparing bacterial cultures
- Conduct basic microbiological assays to characterize phages.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and results.
- Assist in preparing reports and presentations based on lab findings.
- Prepare various microbiological media and reagents.
- Assist with routine lab maintenance, including cleaning and organizing equipment and workspaces.
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a clean and safe BSL-2 laboratory environment.
- Assist in ensuring that lab activities comply with regulatory standards.
- Work closely with microbiologists and other team members to support other ongoing research and development projects.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on project progress and findings.
- Engage in training sessions to enhance your understanding of microbiology and phage therapy.
- Stay updated with the latest research and developments in the field through literature reviews and discussions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, cell biology, or a related field.
- Open to recent graduates or current university students, community college students, and high school graduates who are at least 17 years old and looking to gain microbiology skills.
- Basic knowledge of microbiological techniques and laboratory safety practices.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for scientific research and a keen interest in phage therapy.
If some of the above doesn’t align perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply! If you consider yourself a thoughtful worker, a lifelong learner, and a kind and collaborative team member, Tolka is the place for you.
Benefits:
- Gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art microbiology lab.
- Contribute to innovative research with real-world applications.
- Potential for future employment opportunities based on performance.
